It's 3am. You're zipped to the chin and still cold: a chill settling through the bag, and cold coming up through your back where your hips meet the ground. You lose heat two ways: up through your bag and down into the ground. Fix one and you're still cold.
The Baseline R8 shuts off the ground, without the bulk of a traditional winter mat.

From above: the bag. Many bags quote their limit rating, the temperature you'll survive, rather than the comfort rating you'll actually sleep through. Cheap synthetic or low fill-power down can't trap enough heat on a genuinely cold night.
From below: the ground. The insulation you lie on gets crushed flat, and crushed insulation does almost nothing. Cold ground draws heat out of your body all night, whatever bag you're in.
A warm bag on bare ground leaves you cold. A great mat under a poor bag leaves you cold too. A warm night needs both sides covered.
Three layers of PET film insulation reflect your body heat back up to you and slow the heat lost to the ground. The result is an R-value of 8.0, tested to ASTM F3340-18, the independent industry standard.
That's winter-mat territory, in a mat that packs down to the size of a water bottle.

Is it comfortable for side sleepers?
